The Dashwood sisters—Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret—and their mother must contend with possible poverty after Mr. Dashwood’s estate passes to their half-brother John Dashwood and his snooty wife, Fanny. Fanny convinces John not to grant the sisters the inheritance his father suggested, and the pair quickly move into the estate, disrupting the sisters’ lives. Fanny’s eldest brother, Edward Ferrars, visits and quickly develops a deep bond with Elinor, to Fanny’s chagrin. A distant relative of the Dashwoods, Mrs Jennings, visits and offers them a Devonshire cottage owned by her son-in-law, Sir John Middleton, for reduced rent, which Mrs Dashwood accepts. Elinor hopes Edward will propose, but he only promises to visit soon.

In Devonshire, Marianne is interested by Mrs. Jennings’s stories about her family friend Colonel Brandon, but upon dining at the Middletons’ finds him displeasing. Brandon, meanwhile, develops feelings for Marianne. Elinor is left confused and saddened when the only letter she receives from Edward informs her that he will not be visiting. One day, while Marianne and Margaret are playing in the sea, Marianne sprains her ankle and is rescued by the passer-by John Willoughby, to whom she is instantly attracted. The pair court, but on the day the family expects him to propose, he instead abruptly informs her he must travel to London and will not be returning.

Mrs. Jennings invites the eldest Dashwood sisters to travel with her, Lady Middleton, and her cousin Lucy Steele to London, where Edward will visit them. In London, Lucy, aware of Elinor and Edward’s acquaintance, spitefully confides in Elinor that she and Edward have been secretly engaged for many years, and she hopes to marry him soon. Edward admits this is true, revealing that his parents betrothed them for her wealth, and he honorably refused to break it off after she lost her fortune. After meeting Elinor, Edward hoped Lucy would also wish to end their betrothal, but she refused. Despite her heartbreak, Elinor accepts this outcome and agrees to keep their secret.

Willoughby does not visit the Dashwoods in London or reply to Marianne’s letters, so she instead hopes to see him at a ball. However, he unexpectedly arrives with his betrothed, Miss Grey, and treats Marianne coldly. Marianne publicly humiliates herself in her anguish but admits to Elinor that she and Willoughby were never actually engaged. She argues that, unlike Elinor, she cannot remain silently resigned to her situation. A letter from Colonel Brandon reveals that Willoughby seduced, impregnated, and then abandoned his sister-in-law Eliza, who later died alongside her unborn child.

The Ferrars family learns of Edward and Lucy’s engagement, leading to his disinheritance and making his younger brother Robert heir instead. Impressed by Edward’s moral fortitude, Colonel Brandon offers him the nearby parsonage, thus allowing him and Lucy to marry. In what is to be their final conversation, Elinor encourages Edward to do the honorable deed of marrying Lucy.
