NEW MOVIES: April 2-8, 2026, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “The Drama,” “A Great Awakening,” “The Six Billion Dollar Man”

THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a 2026 animated adventure comedy film based on the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel, as well as Nintendo‘s broader Mario franchise. Produced by Illumination and Nintendo, it is the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023). Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and written by Matthew Fogel, the film stars an ensemble voice cast featuring Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key, reprising their roles from the first film, with Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, and Brie Larson joining the cast. In the film, Mario, Luigi, and their friends adventure into outer space, where they meet Princess Rosalina and face off against Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.

Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, stated in May 2021 that Nintendo was interested in producing more animated films based on its properties if the then-untitled Mario film was successful. Illumination CEO and producer Chris Meledandri was asked about the possibility of a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie before the film’s April 2023 release. Following its box-office success, a new animated Mario film was announced in development at Illumination in March 2024, with Horvath and Jelenic returning as directors and Fogel as screenwriter.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie premiered in Kyoto, Japan, on March 28, 2026, and is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on April 1 by Universal Pictures.

Premise

Mario and Luigi meet and befriend Yoshi as they join Princess Peach and Toad on an adventure into outer space and across the galaxy. They meet Rosalina and face off against Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.[3][4]

The Drama is a 2026 American romantic[2] and comedy drama film[1] written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli. The film stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Mamoudou Athie, Alana Haim, Hailey Gates, and Zoë Winters.[3]

The Six Billion Dollar Man is a 2025 documentary film directed by Eugene Jarecki that traces the saga of lightning-rod WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, whose recent release from prison has reignited a global debate over press freedom. READY OR NOT 2: HEAR I COME

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is a 2026 American comedy-horror film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. It serves as a direct sequel to Ready or Not (2019), with Samara Weaving reprising her role as Grace MacCaullay. MIROIRS NO. 3

Miroirs No. 3 is a 2025 German drama film written and directed by Christian Petzold. It follows Laura (Paula Beer), a depressed music student, who, after suffering an accident, takes shelter in an idyllic home in the German countryside. It also stars Barbara Auer, Matthias Brandt, and Enno Trebs.

The film had its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2025. It was theatrically released in Germany on 18 September by Piffl Medien.

Premise

On a weekend trip, the piano player, Laura, survives a car crash. Unhurt but shaken, Laura is taken in by a country woman who witnessed the accident and who cares for her because of her resemblance to her daughter, who has been dead for a long time.[2]

The film’s title refers to the third movement of the piano suite Miroirs by Maurice Ravel.

NEW MOVIES: March 12-18, 2026, “Project Hail Mary,” “Reminders of Him,” “The Optimist,” “Slanted”

PROJECT HAIL MARY

Project Hail Mary is a 2021 hard science fiction novel by American writer Andy Weir. It centers on schoolteacher and former biologist Ryland Grace, who wakes up aboard a spacecraft afflicted with amnesia.

Project Hail Mary received generally good reviews and was a finalist for the 2022 Hugo Award for Best Novel.[1] The unabridged audiobook was read by Ray Porter and won the 2022 Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year.[2]

The book was adapted into a film starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller, with Drew Goddard writing (his second Andy Weir adaptation) and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directing.[3] It is scheduled for release on March 20, 2026.[4]

As of January 2026, the book has been featured on the New York Times‘ bestseller list for 28 weeks in a row.[5]

Plot

The main story takes place on the Hail Mary spacecraft and is intercut with flashbacks. This summary is in chronological order.

In the near future, scientists observe the Sun dimming, coinciding with the formation of a dim infrared line from the Sun to Venus, dubbed the Petrova line. As the dimming will cause a catastrophic ice age within 30 years, the world’s governments appoint former European Space Agency administrator Eva Stratt to lead a task force to solve the problem. A space probe sent to investigate Venus discovers that alien microbes were generating the light.

Stratt appoints Ryland Grace, a junior high school teacher and infamous former molecular biologist, to study a sample from the Petrova line. He discovers that it is made up of single-celled organisms that consume electromagnetic radiation, naming it “Astrophage.” After his discovery, Stratt sends him back to his job, but he insists on coming back to continue his research on Astrophage after considering his students’ futures. He determines that Astrophage breeds by absorbing energy from the Sun and carbon dioxide from Venus.

Astrophage has also infected and dimmed nearby stars; one star, Tau Ceti, has resisted the infection. Other scientists design an engine that uses astrophage as rocket fuel. An Astrophage-fueled starship, the Hail Mary, is created to travel to Tau Ceti to investigate its Astrophage resistance. There is only enough time to breed enough Astrophage for a one-way trip, so the mission will return its findings to Earth using unmanned mini-ships called “beetles.” Grace trains the science experts for the mission, but they are killed in an accident shortly before launch. With no time to train a comparably skilled replacement, Stratt forces an unwilling Grace to join the suicide mission. Grace threatens sabotage, so a sedative is administered to her before launch, along with a temporary amnesia-inducing drug.

Years later, Ryland Grace emerges from his coma aboard the Hail Mary with no memory of his identity or situation. Grace finds that his crew members have died en route and gives them a space burial. Hail Mary reaches Tau Ceti and is approached by an alien starship, which Grace names “Blip-A.” The other ship indicates, via a star map sculpture, that it came from 40 Eridani. The ships dock, and Grace develops a system to communicate with the eyeless, spider-like, five-legged alien, whom he names “Rocky.” Rocky, a skilled engineer, has been in the Tau Ceti system for 46 Earth years and is the last survivor of their crew, with the rest having died of radiation sickness. As Eridani is also under threat from Astrophage, Grace and Rocky agree to cooperate.

REMINDERS OF HIM

Reminders of Him is a 2026 American romantic drama film directed by Vanessa Caswill from a screenplay by Colleen Hoover and Lauren Levine, based on the 2022 novel by Hoover. It stars Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers, Rudy Pankow, Lainey Wilson (in her film debut), Lauren Graham, and Bradley Whitford.

Slanted is a 2025 American body horror–comedy film[1][2] written and directed by Amy Wang. The film stars Shirley Chen as a Chinese-American teenager who undergoes an experimental ethnic modification surgery to try and fit in at school. Mckenna Grace, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Amelie Zilber provide supporting roles. Wang, Mark Ankner, Trevor Wall, and Adel “Future” Nur produced the film through the companies Mountain Top Pictures and Tideline Entertainment.

The film premiered at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival on March 8 as part of the Narrative Feature Competition. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 13, 2026.

THE BRIDE!

The Bride! is a 2026 American Gothic romance film[3] written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film draws inspiration from the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein, which was based on Mary Shelley‘s 1818 novel Frankenstein.

HOPPERS

Hoppers is a 2026 American animated science fiction adventure comedy film[2] produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Daniel Chong and written by Jesse Andrews, the film features an ensemble voice cast led by Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, and Dave Franco. Its plot follows Mabel Tanaka, an animal lover, whose mind is transferred into a lifelike robotic beaver to communicate with animals and save their habitat from destruction.

Chong began working on a new original film at Pixar in December 2020, after returning to the studio. The film was first officially announced as Hoppers in August 2024, along with Curda, Moynihan, and Hamm, who were revealed as part of the cast.

Hoppers premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on February 23, 2026, and is scheduled for release in the United States on March 6, 2026. The film received positive reviews from critics.

Plot

In the city of Beaverton, young Mabel Tanaka spends time with her grandmother in the local forest glade, home to many wild animals, particularly a colony of beavers. Inspired by her grandmother, Mabel develops a deep love for the natural world. Years later, Jerry Generazzo, the mayor of Beaverton, announces plans to replace the glade with a freeway, claiming the animals have all left. Mabel, now 19, actively campaigns against him. She attempts to rally the locals to her cause through a petition, but to no avail. Mabel’s devotion to activism causes her to disengage from her college studies, much to the irritation of her biology professor, Dr. Samantha “Sam” Fairfax.

One night, while trying to encourage the beavers to return to the glade, Mabel discovers that Sam and her colleagues have secretly been developing a new technology to enhance the study of the animal world. Dubbed the “Hoppers” program, the device enables a human consciousness to “hop” into a robotic animal and get up close to its respective species. Seeing this as an opportunity to save the glade, Mabel hops into a robotic beaver against Sam’s wishes and flees the laboratory, only to be snatched up by an owl and dropped into the glade.
